Born in Ecuador, Mucarsel-Powell immigrated to the United States as a child, growing up in a working-class family. Her background gives her a unique perspective on the struggles of working families, immigrants, and those seeking better opportunities.

Her career in public service began long before she entered politics. Mucarsel-Powell worked as an associate dean at Florida International University, where she spearheaded initiatives to make higher education more accessible for all students. She also worked with non-profit organizations, advocating for healthcare reform, cancer research funding, and environmental protection, demonstrating her passion for community betterment.

In 2018, Mucarsel-Powell made history when she was elected as the first South American-born member of the U.S. Congress, representing Florida’s 26th Congressional District. During her time in Congress, she focused on key issues affecting Floridians, including expanding access to affordable healthcare, protecting the environment, and standing up to the powerful gun lobby in the wake of mass shootings, an issue deeply personal to her after losing her father to gun violence. She co-sponsored legislation aimed at strengthening gun safety laws and supported measures to address climate change, particularly advocating for the preservation of Florida’s natural resources.

As a candidate, Debbie Mucarsel-Powell continues to be a strong voice for the people, emphasizing policies that prioritize working families, healthcare affordability, and environmental sustainability.
