In 2018, Mucarsel-Powell made history when she was elected as the first South American-born member of the U.S. Congress, representing Florida’s 26th Congressional District. During her time in Congress, she focused on key issues affecting Floridians, including expanding access to affordable healthcare, protecting the environment, and standing up to the powerful gun lobby in the wake of mass shootings, an issue deeply personal to her after losing her father to gun violence.
